Yellow Brick Road to Forever

Cairns come to Col. Potter from many sources - some are surrendered directly to us by their owners. Sometimes shelters contact us to help with dogs in their care - they know we can take cairns - leaving precious space in their shelters for dogs who cannot go to a rescue. Some breeders contact us about rehoming their cairns. And we get dogs from mill auctions - hoping to break that cycle of pain. Dogs that come to us from these many origins are all on their own personal Yellow Brick Road to Forever. Some have a short road, being adopted in weeks. Some are with us for a very long time. Some need help with medical or behavioral problems. We do our best with each dog, hoping that somewhere a wonderful forever home is waiting for them.

A lady in waiting yes, but not in the classic sense . . .

Darra came into Col. Potter in November 2008, yes, that is over two years ago. A pull from a shelter, she has adapted to family life very well. But dear Darra is a sweet girl with a serious skin problem. She came to us with a yeast infection on large areas of her body as well as an ear infection. We are working with her to try to heal her skin and overcome the infections. Grooming, with her skin issues, is somewhat painful but is really important for her health. It's no surprise that she doesn't welcome the grooming sessions. Aside from this, Darra is a very loving and well-trained little girl. She lets you know in no uncertain terms when she has to go outside to do her business, but is otherwise quiet around the house. She gets along with the other dogs in her foster home, but she will probably not miss them when she goes to her forever home because she is very people oriented. Nothing is better than a cuddle with a human! Darra is very strong willed and needs a home with terrier experience, so that she knows who is in charge.

When Darra arrived she was very short tempered and not the most pleasant dog. Considering the condition of her skin - it was not surprising. As her skin improved, so has her temperament. She is a sweet loving dog who really prefers the attention of people. She does like to mouth hands and is still very stubborn, so she should be adopted by a very terrier experienced home. While she does play a bit with the other dogs at her foster home, she could easily be an only dog for a knowledgeable owner. Darra is very nicely housetrained - she will bark to alert you to her needs - both to go out and when it is time to come in.

Darra lives in onesies now; the kind not snapped at the back. These help keep the scratching from completely injuring her skin, as well as protecting her bare skin from the sun when she is outside. Virtually all of the skin on her back under the onesie is hairless or has a rash on it, as does her chest and feet. Some of that area is also 'elephant skin' - hardened skin from scratching.

She wants to be a sweet loving dog, but gets a bit growly when you touch something that hurts. She is learning that her foster family does not mean to hurt her, but will muzzle her to perform grooming and skin cleaning as needed. She loves her showers because they are such a relief from the discomfort. Darra loves men, and jumps into their laps for kisses.

Col. Potter has sent her to a specialty vet to determine what is going on - and dermatology vets aren't cheap! She is allergic to many trees and weeds on the east coast where she is fostered. She has undergone the shots, but still has outbreaks when maples set seed, or weeds abound.. Poor Darra is now over 10 years old and according to vet records, has been suffering with this on and off since 2002. She is way past due for the chance to learn what it means to be pain-free. Each and every Cairn that comes into Col. Potter, no matter the circumstances, no matter their condition, no matter their age – is very special to us. We do our very best for each and every one of them, nothing is held back. When they are announced at intake and their brief story shared with all of us in Col. Potter, we immediately have a bond with this little life that so desperately needed our help.

As we say each and every time, they are all very special and all deserve a chance at a happy forever after – none of them deserve any less than our VERY BEST in love, care and support. This one little boy that came in this January 2011 is surely no exception. He so deserves all we can do and all we can give.

Corcoran, “Corky”, is the epitome of being in desperate need of the Colonel’s help. Participating in this New Leash On Life will provide the funds to help him get well, get happy, and get on that much deserved new chance, new life, and a new Yellow Brick Road to FOREVER.

You see, once upon a time a little Cairn boy was born. He was probably sent by a profit breeder to a pet shop to be sold. We bet he was a CUTE little puppy, even though they are ALL cute to us. Before long he had his very own home and family to love him. He grew to be a playful, happy, sweet boy who enjoyed life. He liked people and other animals. He had a home with other dogs, cats and a few more unusual pets - he enjoyed them all. This guy seems to have been loved, but his family wasn’t able to really fully care for him. Corky He didn’t start out as a special needs boy, and hopefully, with our help, he won’t be a special needs boy. But like many Cairns, Corky has an allergy to being bitten by those nasty fleas. There is a simple treatment for this, but for whatever reason, Corky wasn’t awarded that treatment. So he has spent his entire life of nearly 6 years, itching and scratching and biting at his pitiful skin. This situation has gotten to the point where he has pulled out nearly all his coat – a beautiful red coat. In his foster home, under wonderful veterinary care, Corky will rebound and start to heal and mend and will grow that beautiful coat back in. But he can’t do it without all of us working to help him. We all imagine the thought, the feeling he will have, when he doesn’t hurt, doesn’t itch, can be cuddled and held and not be afraid of the pain of a gentle hand just touching him. Corky NOW has a real chance.

When Corky arrived in his regular or in his case, long term foster home, he had already spent a week at a Col. Potter Bed & Biscuit home. We were told that Corky barely moved due to the itchies or pain every move caused. At his first vet visit at his foster home, their vet was horrified when we took off his jammies and she saw the pile of dead skin flakes that fell off his little body. She couldn't believe that someone would let a little dog's skin get so red and inflamed on top of being thickened, gray, and hairless.

Corky He's beginning to move around more comfortably now. He has danced at meal time. He requests to be up on foster mom’s lap or relaxes in a nearby dog bed. He gives kisses and his tail wags happily when he is told that he's such a good little boy and that we love him dearly.

It's still quite cold in his foster home in OH but we’re sure Corky is looking forward to warmer weather and walks in the park. To get to that pleasure of walking where other dogs can be found Corky needs to become healthier so he can get his vaccinations updated.

He's safe in his foster home where the other dogs are all up-to-date but can't be exposed to any other dogs in any public places where he might catch an illness. Corky looks at everyone with such hope in his eyes as he waits for the good health that every dog deserves. He puts up with long baths with special shampoos, bitter medications, and wearing doggie jammies with patience and fortitude, all in hope of a better future. A future that Col. Potter can surely give him with your help. Participating in this fundraiser will surely provide Corky's care givers with the funds they need to make him 100% new again.

The cover is puffy, with thick batting, and there is red cording around the outer edges. It ties closed with a red ribbon. The cover has a Terrier ornament attached to it. Inside are many sleeves to put in 4 x 6 inch photos. The overall measurement of the photo album is approximately 5.5 inches by 7.5 inches. This would be a great gift any dog lover! Our Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network's A New Leash On Life XIX Fundraiser will start on Thursday March 24, 2011 at 9:00 AM EDT and close on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at 9:00 PM EDT.
For every $15 donation or like quantity thereof [i.e. a donation of $60.00 would entitle a donor to have their name placed in four squares] a pledge square or squares will be assigned to the donor, numbered between 1 and 2000. Pledged squares are assigned sequentially as donations are received. Specific number(s) cannot be requested by the donor. Your pledge square numbers will be e-mailed to you upon processing your donation submission and entry into our A New Leash On Life Pledge database.
All donations must be received within 30 days after the close of the fundraiser, otherwise your entry will be voided and any gifts you may have won will be forfeited. If you receive a statement saying we did not receive your payment, PLEASE respond immediately so you do not lose your prize. These statements are sent via email and are valid as of the moment of sending - if you mailed a payment or made it via paypal, please respond or we will not know to look.
When making your donation, you will be asked to list your top 10 choices in gifts. Once submitted, gift requests cannot be changed. CPCRN reserves the right to choose for you if all your gift choices were previously won. We hope you like it, there will be no changes once the award has been announced. There is no guarantee that the gift you win will be the most valuable.
Donations to this fundraiser are not tax deductible. Per the IRS: Contributions you cannot deduct at all include...the cost of raffles, bingo, or other games of chance. You cannot deduct contributions that you give to qualified organizations if, as a result, you receive or expect to receive a financial or economic benefit equal to the contribution.
Gift selection has been automated with the following rules:
- If by chance, the New Leash has over 2000 pledges, CPCRN will add prizes to maintain the 1 in 10 chance of receiving a gift. These additional items are usually duplicates of other prizes already shown.
- If your pledge square is drawn, three passes will be made to determine which gift you will receive. All passes will go in order of the Winners Selection Listing. Gift searching stops for your square once a gift has been awarded.
- Pass 1: You will be awarded the top gift still available from your wish list. If your top available gift is "Donate Gift Back to CPCRN" then your gift search stops, and this is considered your selection. If your top available gift is "Pick For Me" or if all of your wish list items that are associated with that pledge square were previously selected by prior winners, then gift selection will be attempted during "Pass 3".
- Pass 2: All winners who did not have a gift selected in Pass 1 will have our database checked for alternate gift selections on different squares assigned to the same name. (If you use a nickname one time, and your full name the next, we will NOT associate them.) If any of these squares are associated with gifts that have not yet been awarded, the highest ranking available gift will be chosen for you. If gifts are available on more than one square at the same level, the choice between them is random. If all gifts on every square belonging to unique name are not available, then gift selection will occur during Pass 3.
- Pass 3: All those that do not already have a gift selection will be randomly assigned a gift via a random number generator.
$15 donation for a pledge square is a suggested donation. You may receive a pledge square without donating. Send a request to ANLOL@CairnRescue.com and include all the information requested on the donation form along with your list of 10 choices in the email or we will use 'Pick for Me' as your choice.
This fundraiser is open to all individuals over 21 years of age, including CPCRN Board Members, Directors, Group leaders or managers alike with one exception. The person who will run the random selection program to pull 200 unique pledge square numbers will not be allowed to participate in this fundraiser, NOR will they have access or be privy to the database prior to the random number selection which will be time stamped by the program and dated.
If all 2000 pledge squares have not been assigned, then the 200 unique numbers will be drawn from only those pledge squares that have been assigned. IF all 2000 squares are assigned, CPCRN will be giving as an appreciation gift one gift per every 10 squares filled. If only 1000 squares are assigned, the odds of being gifted becomes one in 5 per square that bears your name. ALL 200 gifts will be given, regardless of the number of squares assigned with individual names.
Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network has assigned a non-CPCRN Board member and trusted individual who has been given a "RANDOM SELECTION PROGRAM", which will provide a time stamped and dated list of the programs randomly selected numbers based on the amount of squares with names [i.e. if we have 772 pledges, the Random Selection program will be programmed to select 200 lucky gift recipients and give us the list IN SELECTION ORDER from 1 to 772. This individual will have NO knowledge of our donations database or who has been assigned what number(s) or pledge squares, and WILL NOT pledge in this fundraiser.
This fundraiser will close and a match with the Random Selection program will be made when the closing date and time, as mentioned above has been met. If we pledge over our goal of 2000 squares, additional gifts will be added to maintain the 1 in 10 winning ratio. The additional gifts will be duplicates of ones shown above.
Once the fundraiser closes, the following will occur: The random selection program, when run, will show the results to the person but also automatically email the results to the following addresses:

- The individual who will run the Random Selection program
The results will be promptly posted on this page and sent to CRM.
Winners will be notified of their win on this page at the bottom within 24 hours of the close of the New Leash.
Most items will be mailed out within two weeks after you have been notified of your win AND we have received your full donation. If your item needs to be personalized in any way (embroidered items, size specification, reservations, etc.) you have 30 days after notification of your win to provide any required information, unless otherwise noted in the gift description. If not, the item will be forfeited and donated back to CPCRN.
If CPCRN sends you a notice of non payment, please do not disregard it. Send us a reply about when payment was made. This is the single biggest reason that items are not shipped.
CPCRN'S NLOL will only ship to the USA and Canada.
Canadian Donors Please Read: CPCRN reserves the right to charge additional postage charges to Canadian winners due to the increased fees to ship to Canada. Recipient is responsible for any customs or duty charges. CPCRN cannot be responsible for non delivery to a Canadian address - items cannot be insured nor tracked internationally. Be aware. CPCRN does not verify that gift cards other than our own CP Gift Certificates are good for Canadian users. Before choosing any as a prize, please check with the company you are interested in.
CPCRN generally has incentives on its Cairn Rescue Mentoring Yahoo Group during the running of the NLOL. Only entries from those on the group on incentive day will be eligible to win the incentive - winner choice will be done using the same random number generator as on the final prize selection. A single donation cannot be eligible for both a referral incentive and a CRM incentive. All other rules apply to all incentive prizes.
